One of the BEST, Hands Down!
Date:September 4, 2012
Pros: High quality, Durable, easy to learn
Othello is by and far, one of THE best games ever invented, period. It TRULY does take a moment to learn, and a lifetime to master! With just one move, the tables can completely turn, and the board that was once swimming with black chips, becomes a veritable sea of white!
The game board consists of 64 squares (an 8 by 8 square), each of which can hold a single chip. There are 64 chips with one black side, and one white side, which are divided between the two players. The game starts with four chips on the board, two white, and two black, each at diagonals to one another. Once you determine who will play each color, the person playing black will go first. The idea is to "capture" your opponents chips and flip them over to your color by surrounding them on both ends. It sounds simple, but as the board expands out from the original four pieces, the moves can become quite complex.
I learned how to play this game as a 5 year old, and after all these years, it remains one of my favorite games! Mattel recommends the game for ages 7 (on their website) and up, or ages 8 (according to the box) and up, however I have played the game with kids as young as 5 and 6, and they had little trouble grasping the game.
The only drawback, is that it is only a two player game! However, it is a great two player game as it is super-easy to learn, and able to be played in a relatively short period of time! Unlike chess, two people COULD finish this game during a lunch break!
If you haven't already picked up this game, you SHOULD add it to your game library, as it is one of those classics that NEVER goes out of style!

Old verses new

Pros: i am glda you still offer the game
Cons: Low quality
My mother purchade this game for the family many years ago. When the game was first made the board was bigger and flat with a clothe cover and the chip holder was conected to the game board that remains locked while the game is not in play. My mother still have the same game today.
The game now have risen hard plastic cones on the board which make it hard to grip and move the chips. You have to detact the chip holder to remove any chips and does not hold the chips sucurely while the game is not in use.

Better than I thought...

Pros: challenging fun game
Cons: game board somewhat cheaply made
Othello gets the nod from a fierce Chess & Boggle fan. Great game—sorry I didn't discover it when I was younger. And purchase from Mattel site was superb—great value, and fine shipping. All-in-all: fantastic!

Great classic game!
Date:December 29, 2011
I have loved Othello since I learned how to play it. I do miss the old green board as I felt like there was more space which makes it easier to flip the chips. However, I do like the cover for the chips so none will be lost. Not too crazy about the blue color but don't hate it either. Guess I'm just a stickler for the original!
